How I found a $598 round-trip to Tokyo (and how you can too)

The exact search, the exact dates, and the alert setup that catches error fares.

Tokyo, Japan

The search

I use Google Flights' Explore map with my home airport and 'Japan' as the destination, then flip to the date grid. Tuesdays and Wednesdays in February and early March are consistently the cheapest.

Set alerts, then wait

Turn on price tracking for flexible dates. Fares to Tokyo from LA and SF dip under $650 several times a year — usually for 24–48 hours. When it hits, book: you have 24 hours to cancel free on US-based bookings.

Why Japan is a steal right now

The weak yen means 4-star hotels in Shinjuku are often $120 a night, and an incredible sushi counter lunch is $20. Your flight is the biggest cost — everything else feels discounted.

Jamie's quick tips

  • Fly into Haneda (HND) — it's 30 minutes from the city.
  • Get a Suica card on your phone's wallet.
  • Avoid Golden Week (late April–early May).
